Will it fit at home? Measure before you shortlist
Measure your parking space, access route and the caravan's travelling dimensions before an inspection.
Measure the space and the way in
Begin with the parking area, then trace the entire route from the street. Record the narrowest opening and the lowest overhead point. A generous parking pad is only useful if the caravan can reach it.
Make a simple sketch with measurements and photographs. Include gates in their open position, roof edges, posts, trees and any turn on the approach. If access involves a slope or change of angle, flag that for an on-site assessment rather than assuming a rectangular measurement settles it.
- Usable parking length and width.
- Gate opening and clearance past hinges or posts.
- Lowest roof, beam or overhead obstruction.
- Corners and changes of slope along the approach.
Compare like-for-like dimensions
Ask for overall travelling length, width and height for the exact configuration you are considering. Keep those separate from body length, internal dimensions and dimensions when set up. Ask which accessories and projections the measurement includes.
Record the source and date beside each figure. A model name containing a length is not enough to establish the overall space required. If a dimension is unclear, put it on your inspection list instead of treating it as a fit.
- Confirm whether length includes the coupling and rear-mounted equipment.
- Ask what contributes to the maximum travelling height.
- Check the effect of selected accessories on the overall dimensions.
- Confirm whether the supplied figures describe the inspected unit.
Think about using the space
Draw in the room you need to walk around the van, open a door and reach storage or connections. Consider whether you need to load bags or perform routine checks while it is parked. Decide what access is essential for your household rather than choosing an arbitrary clearance.
Bring your sketch to the inspection. Where access is close or awkward, arrange a practical assessment before committing. The purpose of this checklist is to identify the right questions; it does not confirm a particular van will fit.
- Can the door open in the intended parking position?
- Can you reach the items you need without moving the caravan?
- Will other people still have the access they need?
- Which measurements need an independent second check?
